How to tell if you are getting bald

Losing your hair isn’t the same as going bald. Male pattern baldness is a genetic condition whereas hair loss per se can be caused by a variety of factors.

If you are losing patches of hair in an apparently random manner you may have alopecia, a condition where a person (male or female) loses patches of hair from parts of their body. In extreme cases this may affect all of the hair on the body. Alopecia is thought to have hereditary and autoimmune factors (where the body mistakenly attacks itself). It is not the same as male pattern baldness.

If your hair loss occurs in a more regular receding pattern, usually from the temples and crown of the head, then it is more likely you have male pattern baldness. But remember – most men go bald. It’s nothing to be afraid of or embarrassed about.

How Can I Treat It?

Baldness is a natural process. Firstly you need to ask yourself whether you really want to ‘treat’ it or if you can find a way to accept it rather than try to camouflage bald spots or regain your hair completely.

If you do want treatment, there are two drugs that can help.

Minoxidil lotion  is applied twice daily to the scalp.  About 60 per cent of patients benefit from it to varying degrees. Its effects start to wear off as soon as it is stopped.

Finasteride is a medicine taken in tablet form that partially blocks the effects of the male hormones (an ‘anti-androgen’). It has been shown to halt further hair loss and promote re-growth of scalp hair in approximately 80 per cent of patients after three to six months. The treatment benefits also stop when you stop taking the medication.

  • A family history of balding on mother’s or father’s side
  • Age
  • Significant weight loss
  • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes & lupus
  • Stress
  • Poor Nutrition.
  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen derived from Testosterone
  • It is responsible for development of secondary sexual characteristics for male
  • The growth cycle within a hair follicle takes about 2 to 5 years
  • When hair is cut, hair will grow back out of the follicle from the root of the hair contained within the follicle.
  • High levels of DHT shrinks hair follicles and the cycle is shorten
  • As a result, hair will be thinner, more brittle and falls faster

The evaluation includes a clinical history and patient examination and is followed by invasive (biopsy) and non-invasive tests (interview with detailed medical history collection and questionnaires)

  • Finasteride works to prevent the main cause of alopecia in men and the Minoxidil targets specific areas of the scalp and promotes blood flow to the follicles increasing hair growth. Used together we have found that these treatments are effective in over 9/10 men in preventing further hair loss and promoting new stronger hair to grow.

  • Finasteride is a prescription medicine commonly used to treat male pattern baldness at the crown and in the middle of the scalp. It is currently the most effective hair loss medication available. The medicine works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone known as DHT. Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair growth and slower hair loss. Hair growth on other parts of the body is not affected by finasteride.
  • We offer Finasteride 1mg in a form of an oral tablet. It should be taken once daily, with or without food, around the same time to increase its effectiveness.
  •
  • Finasteride is currently the most effective medically approved treatment for male pattern hair loss. According to the studies, most men who took the recommended dosage saw a reduction in hair loss.
  • In clinical trials, 98.6% of men experienced no serious side effects from Finasteride. It is a very safe treatment for Male Pattern Baldness, and it has been FDA-approved and extensively tested.
  • In the rare event that side effects do occur, they tend to be mild. Possible side effects include dizziness, weakness, swelling in the hands or chest. There are also sexual side effects that have received much media attention: erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and abnormal ejaculations. However, the evidence suggests this is incredibly rare and usually reversible.
  • It’s important to remember that these sexual side effects are most associated with the higher 5mg dose, usually taken by men who are treating an enlarged prostate. There is no statistically significant connection between Finasteride dosages for MPB and sexual side effects.
  • If you are concerned about the potential side effects, get in touch with a goMEN clinician. If you think you are experiencing serious Finasteride side effects right now, contact your GP.
